D.S.M. London Gazette 14 November 1944: ‘For gallantry, skill, determination and undaunted devotion to duty during the landing of Allied Forces on the coast of Normandy.’

The following citation is taken from Admiralty records: ‘On the morning of 26th June this corporal volunteered to go with Sub Lieut Rowe in L.C.M. 1050 to the assistance of the crews of a number of minor craft that were being shelled by the enemy; these craft were immobile and awaiting repair and had already received two direct hits; he and Sub Lieut Rowe attended to the wounded and evacuated them to a safer area; they then returned to collect the remainder of the crews, the shelling continuing all the time. A splendid example of disregard for personal safety and of dauntless courage.’
