O.B.E. London Gazette 7 June 1918: Major Robert Townshend Anwyl-Passingham, Assistant Director of Recruiting, Wrexham Area.

Robert Townshend Passingham was born on 16 October 1867 and educated at Sandhurst. He was gazetted Lieutenant in the South Wales Borderers on 30 Januray 1886, and served with the regiment in Burma during the operations of 1886-87. He transferred to the Indian Staff Corps on 4 March 1888 and was appointed Wing Officer with the 27th Madras Infantry, and continued serving in the Burma operations of 1887-92 with the 12th Mounted Infantry (Burma Battalion). In January 1892 he was appointed Station Commander 3rd Class, at Haka, and was promoted to Captain in January 1897. He became Commandant of the Mogaung Battalion, Burma Military Police, in 1898, and thereafter served with the 72nd Punjabis as a Major and Double Company Commander. He retired on 13 February 1907, but served during the Great War at home as a Recruiting Officer for the 23rd Recruiting Area and afterwards became Assistant Director of National Service for North Wales. He sat as a J.P. and Deputy Lieutenant for Merioneth and died in North Wales on 10 June 1926.
