Percy Tatham Armitage was born in Oldham, Lancashire, on 17 September 1859, and was appointed Ensign in the 76th Regiment on 19 October 1878. He transferred to the 2nd Battalion, 24th Foot, on 26 March 1879 and served with them in South Africa from April 1879 to January 1880, becoming Lieutenant on 7 July 1880. He was promoted to Captain in November 1885 and served during the campaign in Burma 1887-89. He died at Talgarth, near Brecon, after a long illness on 10 September 1893. His younger brother, Cecil Hamilton Armitage, won the Distinguished Service Order for his gallantry in the defence of Kumassi, Ashanti 1900.
