Lancashire Humane Society, large silver medal, 52mm, the reverse inscribed (Presented to Mr. Benjamin Witham Booth, for his zealous exertions on behalf of the Humane Society 1838) minor scuff marks, otherwise good very fine and very rare £300-400

The Lancashire Humane Society was instituted in 1789 and revived in 1824. Little is known of this Society, one of many local Humane Societies prevalent in England at this time, but an example of this medal is recorded in the British Museum Collection. Local newspapers of the period should be able to throw further light on the subject.
