Liverpool Shipwreck and Humane Society, Marine Medal, silver (To Chief Officer Thomas Steele, S.S. “Devonian” for Gallant Service 10th Oct. 1913) complete with silver brooch buckle, minor edge bruising, otherwise good very fine £180-220

Extract from the 75th Annual Report: ‘Gold Medal and Illuminated Certificate of Thanks to Captain A. W. V. Trant, of the steamer “Devonian”; Silver Medal, silver-mounted Barometer and Illuminated Certificate of Thanks each to Chief Officer Tom Steele, First Officer Thomas B. Knight, and Second Officer William Baker; also Silver Medal and Certificate of Thanks to Bo’sun Jacinto Navarro, and Bronze Medal, Certificate of Thanks, with a substantial money award, to each member of the life-boats’ crews, in recognition of gallant service in the rescue of 59 passengers from the “Volturno”, on fire in mid-Atlantic on the 10th October, 1913.’

Chief Officer Thomas Steele was also awarded the Sea Gallantry Medal in silver for the rescue of passengers from the
Volturno.
