Ernest Evans was born in the Parish of St. Paul’s, Bath. A Presser by occupation and a member of the 1st Volunteer Battalion Somerset Light Infantry, he attested for one years service in the Imperial Yeomanry at Bath, on 23 January 1901, aged 24 years, 6 months. With the 48th Company, 7th Battalion (North Somerset) Imperial Yeomanry, he served in South Africa, 9 February 1901-4 August 1902. Evans was discharged at Aldershot on 11 August 1902. With copied service papers.
