Howard Murray Marshall was born on 11 July 1890, the son of G. Marshall of Liphook, Hampshire. Educated at Clifton College and Sandhurst. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Fusiliers on 20 April 1910 and was advanced to Lieutenant in April 1912 and Captain in July 1915. Entering the France/Flanders theatre of war on 2 September 1914, he was appointed a Temporary Major in February 1918. Marshall was appointed a Major in the Reserve of Officers in 1920.
