Charles Rennie was born in Fyvie, Aberdeenshire. A Gardener by occupation, he attested for service in the Gordon Highlanders at Aberdeen on 6 June 1895, aged 20 years, 2 months. With the 1st Battalion he served in India, December 1897-September 1899. Then with the 2nd Battalion he served in South Africa, September 1899-December 1901 and India, January 1902-January 1903. He was discharged in January 1903.
