Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., V.R., narrow suspension (James M. Briggs, Divl. Carpr., H.M. Coast Guard) impressed naming, nearly extremely fine £80-100

James Matthew Briggs was born in Hyde Park Road, Landport, Portsea, Hampshire, on 16 November 1849. He entered the Royal Navy as a Shipwright on 1 January 1873 and served as such aboard the Lord Warden, Revenge and Devastation. In May 1876, on the latter ship, he was appointed Carpenter’s Mate. He served as such in the Royal Navy until he was transferred to the Coast Guard as a Divisional Carpenter in August 1879, when he was based at Rye, Sussex. Briggs was pensioned from the Coast Guard at Newhaven in August 1890. With copied service papers.
