Sydney Herbert Stone was born on 12 December 1885 at St. Pancras, London and was educated at University College School, London. Living at 38 Grafton Road, Bedford, he attested for the Honourable Artillery Company at Finsbury, on 8 November 1915, having previously served in the Bedford Volunteer Training Corps. He served with the Expeditionary Force in France, 26 November 1916-3 March 1918 and was promoted to the rank of Serjeant in January 1918. Sergeant Stone, 1st H.A.C. (Infantry) joined an Officer Cadet Unit in April 1918, aged 32 years and in October 1918 was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the H.A.C.
