William Arthur Harmer was born in Brighton, Sussex. A Chauffeur by occupation, he attested for the Royal West Kent Regiment at Tunbridge Wells on 31 August 1914, aged 19 years. Posted to the 6th Battalion he served with the B.E.F., 1 June-19 October 1915 and 22 March-16 July 1916. Private Harmer was discharged on 23 March 1918 as ‘no longer physically fit for war service’. In addition to the above he was awarded the Silver War Badge. With copied service papers and m.i.c.
