Three: Chief Officer H. Hawkes, H.M. Coast Guard (Isle of Wight), late Royal Navy

Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, dated reverse, no clasp (H. Hawkes, A.B., H.M.S. Minotaur); Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., V.R., narrow suspension (Henry Hawkes, Comd. Boatn., H.M. Coast Guard); Khedive’s Star, 1882, contact marks, generally very fine (3) £250-300

Henry Hawkes was born in Clerkenwell, London in December 1855 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in August 1871. Advanced to Ordinary Seaman in the Royal Adelaide in 1875 and to Able Seaman while stationed ashore in 1877, he was present in operations off Egypt in the Minotaur in 1882, latterly in the rate of Leading Seaman. Transferring to the Coast Guard as a Boatman in November 1883, Hawkes was advanced to Commissioned Boatman in April 1891, awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in April 1896, and pensioned ashore as a Chief Officer in December 1910, latterly having been employed at Yarmouth.
