Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., 1st issue, large letter reverse, edge dated (David McKay, Serjeant, 79th Regiment Foot 1846) steel clip refitted, with steel straight bar suspension, signs of brooch mounting to reverse, edge bruising, contact marks, nearly very fine £100-140

David McKay was born in the Parish of Rae near Thurso, Caithness on 2 June 1808, one of eleven children. On 15 April 1825 he was attested for the 79th Regiment of Foot. McKay served in the Regiment for 21 years 107 days; 11 years of these were served in Canada, 1825-1836. On 20 May, 1846 a Regimental Board was convened at Belturbet, Cavan, Ireland, where the Regiment was then stationed to “Consider the discharge of 397 Serjeant McKay.” His conduct was stated to have been “Very Good” and he was discharged on 27 July 1846 in consequence of having been found unfit, (medically) for further service.
