John William Bird was born in Todmordon, Lancashire, lived in Rochdale and enlisted at Bury. Serving in the 11th Battalion Royal Fusiliers, he was killed in action, on 10 February 1917, aged 28 years. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. He was the son of William and Elizabeth Bird of Vavasour Street, Rochdale; and husband of Margaret Kay (formerly Bird) of 4 Sheriff Street, Rochdale. ‘J.W.’ and ‘T. Bird’ are believed to be brothers.
