Five: Major D. E. Riddiough, Royal Armoured Corps, late Duke of Wellington’s Regiment

1939-45 Star; France and Germany Star; Defence and War Medals, M.I.D. oakleaf; Efficiency Decoration, E.II.R., Territorial, the reverse officially dated ‘1953’, in its Royal Mint case of issue, together with related prize medals for Lothersdale Sporting Championships 1924-25 (2), silver, with small gold cartouches, Bradford Technical College Students Union sporting events 1928-29 (5), bronze, and Skipton Rural District Council Past Chairman’s Badge, silver-gilt and enamels, the reverse inscribed ‘Denis Ewart Riddiough, 1959-61’, all of these last in their boxes or cases of issue, generally extremely fine (Lot) £120-150

Denis Ewart Riddiough was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 2/6th Battalion, Duke of Wellington’s Regiment in June 1939, direct from Bradford Grammar School Cadet Corps. Embarked for France in April 1940, he commanded ‘C’ Company up until the Battalion’s withdrawal via Cherbourg on 17 June, onetime being commended by his C.O. for the strength of his defensive positions (the regimental history refers).

In January 1943, Riddiough transferred to the Royal Armoured Corps, and was mentioned in despatches for his subsequent gallantry in the North-West Europe operations (London Gazette 8 November 1945 refers), while in 1953 he was awarded his Efficiency Decoration in the rank of Major. R.A.C. (London Gazette 31 March of that year refers); sold with original Army Medal Office forwarding letter and registered envelope for the latter, dated 19 October 1955 and addressed to the recipient at his residence in Lotherside, near Keighley, Yorkshire, together with two old uniform riband bars and several pips.
