Aubrey Reginald Simpson was born at Mount Edgecombe, Natal in January 1910 and enlisted in the Union Defence Forces in April 1940. Subsequently commissioned in the South African Engineering Corps, he served in the 1st Field Survey Company in East Africa (August 1940-October 1941), in 46 Survey Company in North Africa (January-September 1943), and in Italy (October 1943-December 1944), in which latter month he was embarked for South Africa. He had, meanwhile, attained the rank of war substantive Captain; sold with copied service record, which confirms his entitlement to the 8th Army clasp.
