William Frederick George, who was born in Chiswick, London in April 1893, was mentioned in despatches for services in Defensively Equipped Merchant Ships (D.E.M.S.) (London Gazette 2 June 1943 refers), an original accompanying letter of notification from the Admiralty being addressed to him in the M.V. Dunnottar Castle, which ship was requisitioned by the Admiralty in August 1939 for service as an Armed Merchant Cruiser in the South Atlantic - in 1942, however, she was converted into a troopship; also sold with his original Order for Release from Naval Service, dated 19 June 1945, and his post-war National Union of Seamen member’s book, this stating his rate as Bosun.
