Alfred Lane was born in Beauminster, Dorset and enlisted in the 39th Brigade at Weymouth in 1877, aged 21 years. Joining the Gordon Highlanders in July 1881, he served in Egypt from August 1882 to June 1883, where he was present at Tel-el-Kebir, and was finally discharged in May 1889; sold with copied service papers.
