Daniel Bullen enlisted on 3 September 1914, a miner from West Melton, near Rotherham, Yorkshire. He served in the Drake Battalion R.N.V.R. with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force from March 1915 until the end of that year when he was invalided to England with dysentery. He was mentioned in despatches by G.O.C. in C.M.E.F., London Gazette 28 January 1916, and awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for services in Gallipoli, London Gazette 6 September 1916.
