Frederick Baker was born in Radipole, Dorset, c.1865. Before joining the Army he was employed as an apprentice at a printing office. Joining the Army, he served with the 1st Battalion Dorsetshire Regiment on the N.W. Frontier of India. With the battalion in the Tirah campaign, he was killed in action at the battle of Dargai, 20 October 1897. His name is commemorated on a Dorset Regiment Memorial to those who died on the N.W. Frontier, at Borough Gardens, Dorchester, and at Sherborne Abbey Church, Dorset. In the their efforts to seize the Dargai Heights, the Dorsetshire Regiment suffered 10 men killed and 39 wounded.
