John Richard Kenneth Doidge was killed in action on 30 April 1940, when his ship the sloop H.M.S. Bittern was heavily damaged by enemy aircraft in Namsos Fjord, Norway - she had to be abandoned and sunk by torpedo. The son of John and Ethel Doidge of Bishopstoke, Hampshire, he was 20 years of age and is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
