John Thomas Treadgold was born in Camberwell, Surrey in August 1865 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in May 1881. Advanced to Boy 1st Class in May 1882, he served on H.M.S. Temeraire, from August to September 1883, when he was promoted to Ordinary Seaman. He was then posted to the gunboat Condor, aboard which vessel he served from September 1883 to September 1887 and was advanced to Able Seaman in June 1884. Treadgold received further promotion to Leading Seaman when on Champion in February 1891 and was discharged in August 1893; sold with copied service papers and research.
