Charles Brook Riley was born on 18 February 1877. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Hampshire Regiment, on 2 January 1897, having previously served in the Local Military Forces, Victoria. He was appointed to the 25th Punjabis, Indian Army, on 22 August 1898. He was promoted to Lieutenant in June 1898, Captain in January 1906 and Major in 1915. With the 25th Punjabis, Riley served on the North West Frontier during 1908, serving in operations in the Zakka Khel country. At the outbreak of the Great War, Riley and the 25th Punjabis were posted to Hong Kong. In February 1915 they returned to Jhelum in India and thence to Bannu. During this period the battalion was mainly employed on outpost duty at Miranshah or in the Tochi posts. Major Riley retired from the Army on 2 August 1916.

Sold with copied photograph, gazette extracts and other research. Also with photocopied manuscripts by Major Riley, entitled, ‘A Book of Short Stories’ with subtitles: ‘Off Duty on the Indian Frontiers with Orderly, Rod and Gun’; ‘Soldiering and Sport in the Swat Valley, on the North-West Frontier of India’; ‘A Court Martial and the Prince of Wales’ Own’.
