The 29th Punjabis were part of the Indian Army Expeditionary Force “C” and sailed from India on 19 August 1914, landing in British East Africa on 1 September 1914. Detailed to defend the Uganda Railway line they were credited with firing the first shot in anger by the Indian Army in the Great War. During December 1915-January 1916 the 29th Punjabis were part of the ‘Magadi Division’ before being assigned to the 2nd Brigade, 1st East African Division upon its formation. The 29th Punjabis returned to India in May 1917, moving to Rawalpindi where it joined the 1st (Peshawar) Division. In March 1918 the battalion departed India for Egypt, arriving at Suez in April 1918. It then joined the 233rd Brigade, 75th Division, in Palestine, on 28 April 1918.
