Edgar Newby, engraver and check maker, fl. 1881-1912, firstly in Cowbridge road, then Royal arcade, Queen street, Castle street and Custom House street (Cox, p.4); Wright Butler & Co acquired the Elba steelworks in 1878, but the works was temporarily closed in 1898 because of the depressed state of the steel market (Cox, p.32)
