Paul Skidmore series, British Penny, 1797, Britannia seated right, rev. twr cypher, date on tablet below, edge i promise to pay on demand the bearer one penny, 23.94g/6h (DH 6). Reverse edge fault at 5 o’clock, otherwise extremely fine with a hint of original colour, very rare £500-600

The pedigree of this piece has been confused with that formerly in the T.A. Jan collection, lot 116 (the Bell plate coin) which does not have the edge fault. Gerson acquired that coin at the Jan sale in 1983 but subsequently traded it for this one
