France, President Kruger, Peace of Utrecht, 1902, silvered bronze medal by Henri Dupuis, bust left, reverse allegory of the Boer nation standing on map of Africa amidst clouds, 68mm (cf. BDM III p. 162). Very fine to extremely fine (£50-70)

The South African War (1899-1902) ended with the Vreeniging Treaty of 31 May, 1902. Kruger retired to Utrecht where he died in 1904. During the conflict continental European opinion was overwhelmingly anti-British and the Afrikaners seen as gallant defenders of their liberty against the verwhelming might of the British Empire. Anti British cartoons appeared in the press, postcards circulated, and a number of medals struck, including this fine portrait piece of the ZAR president.
