WORLD ART MEDALS France, Unknown Portrait, large uniface cast medallion by Eugéne Oudinè in high relief of an elderly man, with side whiskers, c. 1860, signed Eck & Durand [foundry] on reverse, 144mm. Extremely fine (£30-40)

Eugéne Oudinè (1810-1889), sculptor, medallist and coin engraver. Dr Weber desribes him as “one of the finest medallists to make struck medals (by the help of the reducing machine) in the modern French style; and Roger-Marx wrote of him “Pour l’importance, il n’est pas d’action comparable a celle qu’il exerça durante quarante années.” The portrait has not been identified by the consignor, but a fine portrait by a major medallist and worthy of further research.
