Medals Related to Sports, France, Repression de Braconnage (Poaching), 1905, silver plaquette by Ovide Yencesse, bust of Diana left, reverse rabbit hanging from a tree, etc., legend below, in original fitted case, matt finish, 52 x 40mm (cf. DNW 38, Lot 763; cf. PBE 1031 for a cast medal of slightly smaller size). Extremely fine (£30-40)

The purpose of this medal is unclear, perhaps it represents a Ministry of Agriculture award of some kind. Yencesse’s portrait is, as is generally the case, masterly, but his treatment of Diana unusual; instead of the wild Roman goddess of hunting and the woods or the dark and vindictive Artemis of Greek myth the medallist portrays Diana as a young contemporary French woman, a model of elegance, decorum and poise.
