William Jones served as a Volunteer First Class aboard H.M.S. Captain at Martinique and as Midshipman aboard H.M.S. Constant at St Sebastian.

William Jones entered the Navy on 8 June 1805, as a Volunteer on board the Captain 74, and, during a period of four and a half years that he continued in that ship, he assisted at the capture, 27 September 1806, of the French frigate La Président of 44 guns, was present in 1807 at the reduction of Copenhagen and Madeira, and served at the taking of Martinique in February 1809. He removed in December 1809 to the Dictator 64, and was for sixteen months employed on the Baltic and Leith stations. He afterwards served off the coasts of France and Spain, among the Western Islands, and in North America, as Midshipman in the Sceptre 74, the Constant gun-brig, in which vessel he co-operated with the Army at the siege of St Sebastian, and the Tonnant 80, flagship of Hon. Sir Alexander Cochrane. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 February 1815.
