A good Second World War North Africa operations M.M. group of six awarded to Corporal A. Stenton, York and Lancaster Regiment, who brought in wounded under heavy fire during Rommel’s “Dash to the Wire” in November 1941

M.M. London Gazette 24 February 1942. The original recommendation for an immediate award states:

‘On 26 November 1941, Corporal Stenton was N.C.O. in charge of Stretcher Bearers with a Company holding the post LION. During the day the post was subjected to heavy shelling and a number of casualties resulted. Although the shelling continued, Corporal Stenton left his cover and proceeded to collect and dress the wounded. This he continued to do throughout the afternoon without any consideration of his own safety. A few days later, when attached to another Company, he again left cover under heavy fire and brought in a wounded man who was unable to walk. Throughout the whole operations this N.C.O. did excellent work and set a fine example to other Stretcher Bearers.’

Arthur Stenton was serving in the 2nd Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment at the time of the above cited deeds.
