Pair: Major John Joseph Banham, 9th Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment, killed in action, 27 March 1918

Before the war, John Joseph Banham was employed by Messrs. Longley & Co., of Crawley; prior to which he had worked on his sheep ranch in New Zealand. He enlisted soon after the outbreak of hostilities, joining firstly a Public Schools Battalion before being transferred to the Royal Sussex Regiment. During the course of his service he was slightly wounded in the arm and also gassed. For his wartime service he was mentioned in despatches. As a Captain in the 9th Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment, he was killed in action on 27 March 1918. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial. He was the son of John and Julia Banham of The Meadows, Crawley, Sussex. Sold with copied photograph and research.
