William D’Olier Barrington was born on 17 August 1870. He was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant, Royal Engineers, on 25 July 1890, becoming Lieutenant three years later, and Captain on 3 July 1901. He served in Gibraltar, September 1892-October 1895 and then in South Africa with the 38th Field Company from 7 January 1900, until 13 May 1903, when he he died from enteric fever at Potchefstroom. His Q.S.A. was sent to his father, Colonel J. T. Barrington of 18 Victoria Road, Charlton, Kent, in July 1903.
