Henry Minns was born in Chelmsford, Essex. A Labourer by occupation and a member of the 4th Battalion Essex Regiment Militia, he enlisted into the Rifle Brigade on 1 November 1895, aged 18 years, 1 month. With the 2nd Battalion Rifle Brigade he served in Malta, September 1897-July 1898; Egypt and the Sudan, July 1897-September 1898; in operations in the occupation of Crete, September 1898-October 1899; South Africa, October 1899-September 1902; and Egypt, September 1902-March 1903. For his service in the Nile Expedition of 1898, he was awarded the Queen’s Sudan Medal and Khedive’s Sudan Medal with Khartoum clasp. For his service in the Boer War he was awarded the Queen’s Medal with two clasps and King’s Medal with two clasps. Posted to England and transferred to the Army Reserve in March 1903, he was discharged at the termination of his period of engagement on 31 October 1907. Sold with copied service papers and roll extracts.
