George Taylor was born in Small Heath, Birmingham. A Cricket Bat Maker by occupation and a member of the 1st Volunteer Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment, he attested for the King’s Royal Rifle Corps at Winchester on 12 April 1892, aged 19 years, 9 months. Serving with the 3rd Battalion at Home, he was transferred to the Army Reserve on 23 December 1897 having attained the rank of Lance-Sergeant. He was recalled to active service on 9 October 1899 with the rank of Sergeant and was posted to South Africa, 4 November 1899-2 February 1900. Serving with the 3rd Battalion King’s Royal Rifle Corps, he was wounded at Spion Kop, 24 January 1900 and was invalided to England. Making a recovery, he was posted to Ireland and thence was again posted to South Africa, 3 May 1902-11 April 1904, serving with the 4th Battalion. He was discharged on 11 April 1904. His two periods of service in South Africa, with two battalions resulted in a duplicate issue of the Q.S.A. Medal. During the Great War he served with the Garrison Battalion of the Hampshire Regiment, entering the France/Flanders theatre of war in April 1916. For his services he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. Sold with copied service papers and other research.
