Pair: Private J. Corfield, Shropshire Light Infantry

John Corfield was born in Colwall, Ledbury, in Herefordshire. A Labourer by occupation and a member of the 4th (Militia) Battalion Shropshire Light Infantry, he attested for the Shropshire Light Infantry at Hereford on 15 May 1888, aged 18 years, 6 months. With the 1st Battalion he served in Malta, September 1889-March 1891; Egypt, March-December 1891; Hong Kong, December 1891-December 1894, and India, December 1894-January 1896. Returning to England, he was transferred to the Army Reserve on 8 February 1896. With the onset of the Boer War he was recalled to the colours, being mobilized on 9 October 1899. He served in South Africa, 7 November 1899-26 March 1901. Returning home, he was discharged on 15 May 1901 having completed his limited period of engagement. Sold with copied service papers.
