Pair: Corporal M. McGrane, King’s Royal Rifle Corps

Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, dated reverse, 3 clasps, Tel-El-Kebir, Suakin 1884, El-Teb (3402 Corpl., 3/K.R. Rif. C.); Khedive’s Star, 1882, reverse impressed, ‘3402 3 KRR’, first with some edge bruising and contact marks, nearly very fine and better (2) £300-350

Michael McGrane was born in Dublin. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the 60th Rifles on 23 May 1878, aged 20 years. With the 3rd Battalion, he served in South Africa, May 1879-February 1882, seeing action in both the Zulu War and the First Boer War, the 3rd/60th being heavily involved in the battles at Laing’s Nek, Ingogo and Majuba Hill. For his service against the Zulus, he was awarded the South Africa Medal with the clasp ‘1879’. Promoted Lance-Corporal in February 1882 and Corporal in June, he then served at Malta, February-July 1882 and Egypt, July 1882-June 1884. Reduced to a Private in January 1883 due to drunkenness, he was transferred to the Army Reserve in June 1884 and discharged in May 1890. Sold with copied services papers, roll extracts confirming clasps and other research.
