A fine 1st Life Guard officer’s sword by Andrews, Pall Mall, London, for Mervyn Wingfield, 7th. Viscount Powerscourt, the 96.5cm blade unusually of flat-solid section, back-edged for the last 32cm, finely etched with intricate regimental device within an ornate cartouche, and within a second cartouche the mottos ‘Non ti fidar di me’ and ‘Se il cor ti manca’, steel guard of regimental pattern incorporating ornate brass regimental device of crowned 1 LG, the borders decorated with brass studs, the guard retaining its original liner, steel back-strap, stepped brass pommel and steel tang-button, fish-skin covered grip bound with copper wire, complete with its steel scabbard of regimental pattern having a narrow steel shoe and two stepped brass bands with two hanging rings, blade retaining almost all original finish and good condition overall £2000-2500

Mervyn Wingfield, 7th. Viscount Powerscourt, born at Powerscourt, Enniskerry, Co Wicklow on October 13th. 1836, joined the 1st. Regiment of Life Guards as a Cornet and Sub Lieutenant (by purchase) on December 1st. 1854, a Lieutenant (by purchase) 20th. September 1856, retired July 8th. 1862, a number of photographs and portraits exist of Powerscourt in the uniforn of his regiment, a good artist and a screen survives in the Officer’s Mess to this day containing water colours painted by him depicting various officers who served with him in the form of ‘Regimental Cartoons’
