Kenneth Douglas-Morris in The Naval Long Service Medals, lists 38 known examples (including that to Tamlin) of the scarce V.R. narrow suspension, engraved named medal with years of service on edge.

Henry Tamlin was born in Millbrook, Cornwall on 11 April 1827. He entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 1st Class on the Inconstant in October 1846, attaining the rating of Able Seaman aboard the ship in July 1850. He served on the Cumberland, January 1851-October 1854 and the Monarch, October 1854-June 1858. Tamlin was then employed in the Coast Guard, June 1858-June 1875. As a Command Boatman he was awarded the Long Service Medal on 1 June 1875. Sold with copied service papers.
