Royal National Institute for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck, G.IV.R., silver (Mr David Edwards, voted 11 Apr. 1832) pierced with ring suspension, slight edge bruising, good very fine £400-500

‘8 March 1832: In violent weather a number of vessels were in difficulties off Montrose, Angus, and, after the private lifeboat had been to their aid, it was re-manned by a fresh crew of three Masters and 13 seamen. Helped by the six fishermen in a salmon coble, the new crew saved, with considerable difficulty, the Master and four others from the smack Ann which was being driven on shore at Annat, near Montrose’ (Ref. Lifeboat Gallantry, by Barry Cox).

Master Mariner David Edwards was one of three Master Mariners and six Fishermen who were awarded the R.N.I.P.L.S. Silver Medal for this rescue. It is recorded on the Montrose R.N.L.I. website that ‘Nine Silver Medals were awarded for the rescue of 30 people from the vessels
Annie, Sophia and Ann on 25 March’.
