Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, undated reverse, 1 clasp, The Nile 1884-85 (1528 Pte. C. Baker, 2/Essex R.) pitting from star, otherwise nearly very fine £100-140

1 officer and 55 other ranks of the Essex Regiment served in the Mounted Infantry Camel Regiment on the Nile, of whom 22 were also present at Abu Klea.

Charles Baker was born in Kensington, London. A Labourer by occupation and a former member of the 3rd (Militia) Battalion Middlesex Regiment, he enlisted into the 56th Regiment (2nd/Essex) at Westminster on 27 July 1870, aged 18 years 6 months. With them he served in India, March 1871-March 1877; Aden, April 1877-February 1878; Gibraltar, May 1883-February 1884; Egypt, February 1884-February 1887; Malta, February 1887-July 1889, and Cyprus, July 1889-April 1891. He was appointed a Lance-Corporal in May 1887 and was discharged in England on 9 April 1891. Sold with copied discharge papers.
