William Barnard was born on 27 December 1863 at Tottenhoe, near Stanbridge Ford, Leighton Buzzard. He attested for the Royal Horse Guards on 13 November 1880. He served at Home for 14 years before being discharged on 7 March 1895. Barnard entered the Royal Service in 1913 and was employed as a King’s Marshalman. In London on 17 November 1914 he re-enlisted into the Royal Horse Guards, then aged 50 years 9 months. He served at Home until discharged on 31 March 1920. Receiving no war medals, he was awarded the Army L.S. & G.C. Medal with Gratuity, this notified in A.O. 130 of April 1919. After his military service he was re-employed as a King’s Marshalman, being awarded the Royal Household Faithful Service Medal in 1937. William Barnard died in Hillingdon, Middlesex, on 22 March 1937. Sold with copied research, including an article on the history and duties of King’s Marshalmen.
