Bertram Percival Chadwick was born in Murshall, Staffordshire, on 3 June 1889. As an Officer Cadet he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery, on 12 March 1917. He was promoted to Lieutenant on 12 September 1918 and in October was appointed Adjutant and Acting Captain. On 8 February he relinquished his acting rank on ceasing to hold the appointment of Adjutant and on 1 April 1920 he relinquished his commission and was granted the rank of Captain. Chadwick then entered the Nigeria Civil Service, serving in the Administrative and Engineering sections of the Public Works Department. Whilst in Nigeria he joined the European Reserve Force and was appointed a Captain in the 6th Battalion on 20 May 1930. He was awarded the Coronation Medal in 1937 in his capacity in the Public Works Department (Nigeria Gazette 12 May 1937) and was awarded the Efficiency Decoration (Nigeria) as an Executive Engineer Grade 1 of the Public Works Department, in respect of his service with the European Reserve Force (Nigeria Gazette 6 July 1939).
