James Robert Robertson Silver was, in 1904, a Locomotive Foreman with the Bengal and North Western Railway at Somastipore. By 1907 he was an Assistant Locomotive Superintendent at Sonepur and in 1919 was a Locomotive and Carriage Superintendent. Having served in the ranks of the Volunteers, Silver was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the United Provinces Horse 1st (Southern) Regiment, on 1 April 1914. He attained the rank of Major with the 7th (Southern) United Provinces Horse, I.D.F., on 1 April 1917. He was awarded the Volunteer Force Long Service Medal, published in I.A.O. 86 of March 1915.
