Charles Stuart Rowbotham was employed with the Southern Mahratta Railway and later the Southern Indian Railway. He was granted a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Southern Mahratta Railway Rifles on 18 February 1898. The H.Q. of the unit was at Dharwar. Rowbotham was promoted to Lieutenant in November 1899 and Captain in March 1901. He transferred to the South Indian Railways Volunteer Rifle Corps as a Captain in July 1904. Granted the honorary rank of Major in February 1913, he was awarded the Indian Volunteer Forces Officers’ Decoration, the award published in the Gazette of India of 29 August 1914. Further promotion followed, being advanced to Major in July 1916 and to Lieutenant-Colonel and Commandant of the South Indian Railways Battalion on 31 August 1922. Lieutenant-Colonel Rowbotham resigned his commission in 1925. With copied research.
