Elwin Frank Adams Humphreys served in the ranks of the Volunteers some 10 years prior to the Great War. During the War he was appointed a 2nd Lieutenant of Infantry in the I.A.R.O., with seniority of 19 August 1918. At the end of the war he was Assistant Commandant, on the Technical Recruiting Staff at 128 Railway Training Camp at Puri. He then took part in the Third Afghan War where he served as a Captain. Continuing his Volunteer service, he was awarded the Volunteer Force Long Service Medal in 1924 when ranked as Company Sergeant-Major of the Calcutta Presidency Battalion A.F.(I), the award published in I.A.O. 359 of May 1924.
