William Henry Bateman Lawes was a Tea Planter, firstly as an Assistant on the Giabarrie and Pathemara Tea Estates at Udabar, Cacher. In 1891/92 he became Manager in the Bishnauth Tea Company Ltd, at Dikorai, Darrang, Assam; and remained as such until the Great War. Serving initially in the ranks of the Volunteers, he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Assam Valley Light Horse on 1 January 1900. Promoted to Captain in December 1903, he was awarded the Volunteer Force Long Service Medal, published in I.A.O. 728 of December 1905. Advanced to Major in December 1911 and Lieutenant-Colonel in April 1916, he was awarded the Indian Volunteer Forces Officers’ Decoration, published in the Gazette of India of 10 December 1910.
