John Cadwgan Powell-Price was born on 11 June 1888, the son of the Revd. Cadwgan Powell-Price, who was later Chancellor of Bangor Cathedral. He was educated at St. John’s School, Leatherhead and Selwyn College, Cambridge, which he entered as a Classical Exhibitioner. He graduated with a B.A. in 1910 and M.A. in 1920. His life thereafter was spent in education and much of it in India. He was Assistant Master at Portsmouth Grammar School in 1912; then Vice-Principal, Meerut College, India during 1913-14. He was appointed a 2nd Lieutenant in the Indian Army Reserve of Officers on 30 October 1914 and was attached to the 8th Rajputs. He was promoted to Lieutenant in October 1915 and to Captain in October 1918, and was acting Major from September 1918. During the war he served as a Special Service Officer with the Alwar Imperial Service Infantry, 1915-19, serving in the area of the Suez Canal, Sinai and Palestine. For his services he was mentioned in despatches by General Allenby, C-in-C. Egypt Expeditionary Force (London Gazette 14 June 1918). After the Great War in 1920 he was appointed to the Indian Educational Service and was Head Master of the Government High School at Allahabad, 1920. He was latterly Director of Public Instruction, United Provinces, 1939-43. For his services he was awarded the C.I.E. (London Gazette 12 June 1941). He was appointed a Lieutenant in the United Provinces Horse (Southern Regiment) on 1 April 1930. He was promoted to Major, and Commanding, the Allahabad Contingent in September 1936. Appointed Local Lieutenant-Colonel in 1937, he was later granted the honorary rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. Powell-Price was awarded the Efficiency Decoration (India) in the Gazette of India of 31 July 1943. He resigned his commission whilst retaining his rank on 1 May 1943. Returning to England, his address in his closing years was in Ladbrooke Road, London, W.11. He died in London on 13 February 1964. Sold with copied research.
