John Stuart Mason was granted a commission as an Ensign in the 3rd Corps, Hertfordshire Rifle Volunteers, on 15 May 1871; the corps being based at Ledbury. He was promoted to Lieutenant in that Corps on 9 June 1871 and served as such until he resigned his commission on 19 December 1877. Going to New South Wales, Mason joined the Volunteers there, and was appointed a 2nd Lieutenant in the 2nd Infantry Regiment on 30 June 1883. He served in ‘C’ Company based at Sydney. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on 4 April 1887. Mason was transferred to the Reserve of Officers as a Captain on 3 October 1896. He was awarded the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Officers’ Decoration in 1902, the award published in the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette of 1 August 1902. Captain Mason retired from the service on 1 September 1902.
