Harold Thomas Carew Ivens was born on 27 June 1880, and commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in the 5th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, on 8 March 1899. He was promoted to Lieutenant in the 1st Battalion in July 1901 and transferred to the Indian Army in January 1902. He served on the North West Frontier of India in 1908, and was dangerously wounded during the operations against the Mohmands (Medal with Clasps). Served as Double Company Commander, 26th Punjabis, at Kohat in 1908, at Samana in 1911, and at Hong Kong in 1913 and 1914. He was Staff Captain, India, from 15 May to 8 June 1915; Major, September 1915; Act. Lieutenant-Colonel 11-23 February 1917, and 15 April to 14 May 1917; served in Afghanistan, N.W. Frontier of India 1919, with the 26th Punjabis (Clasp). Ivens was confirmed Lieutenant-Colonel in January 1925 and retired on 1 September 1929.
